A shooting incident in Texas has left one man dead and nine others injured. Police said gunfire erupted at a Halloween party on Saturday night.
Police said it received calls of shots being fired at a party being held at the Octavia Event Center in Texarkana. The center is located just 180 miles east of Dallas and along the state’s border with Arkansas.
Authorities said there at least “a couple of hundred people” were present at the venue when the shooting happened. When officers arrived at the scene, they were reportedly met with a large number of people running away from the building. When officers entered the building they saw several people on the ground “suffering from gunshot wounds.”
Ambulances, police, and private vehicles were able to take 10 people who were shot to two different hospitals. Police said a 20-year-old man died shortly after he was taken to the hospital. Police did not disclose the identity of the man that died or the other nine people that were shot and injured.
Police said the shooter was a black male. Witnesses said he had escaped using an unknown vehicle following the shooting. Authorities said they have not yet determined the motive for the shooting. However, a preliminary investigation indicates that the shooting may have been sparked by an altercation among some of the partygoers.
