After the December shooting in a Connecticut Elementary School, one of the worst in the United States, President Obama has shown his intention to push for new gun control laws and legislations.

“I’m going to be putting forward a package and I’m going to be putting my full weight behind it,” President Obama said. “I’m going to be making an argument to the American people about why this is important.”

In a press conference, Obama had vowed to pass stricter gun control laws and legislations within the next year, which might include a ban on assault rifles and semiautomatic weapons, this has caused an increase in firearm purchases across the U.S. for fears of not being able to purchase certain firearms when these laws are put into place. This in turn has caused the wait for checks to continually become longer as more and more people buy these firearms.

In the last month of 2012, the FBI had made 2,700,000 gun background checks, for a total of more than 19 million background checks for 2012. December is usually the busiest month for background checks due to holiday gifts.

“I’m in the gun business for 30-years and we never experienced anything like this,” Bernstein, a gun store owner explained. “They told us nine to ten days to get approved, an approval, which used to take 15 to 20-minutes.”

The president said he supports increased background checks and bans on assault weapons and high-capacity bullet magazines. He also voiced skepticism about the National Rifle Association’s proposal to put armed guards in schools.
