A new measure for internet dating sites sent by the Illinois Senate would now require these sites to provide more safety checks for customers. The new legislation which was approved by the majority would require dating sites to say upfront if they are running criminal background checks on its members or for those who wish to sign up.

Any such background checks run on these sites will also be required to divulge what the checks will consist of, including whether or not they check government and federal databases, court records, sex offender registries and other criminal records. A site then will also have to mention whether any such violations or red flags on any of the searches would disqualify a person from registering.

The new bill now also requires sites to have a section dedicated to informing its users on safety precautions and safety tips, like not placing their address anywhere off the site. The sites will also be required to include warnings and disclaimers that background checks are not 100% foolproof. Any dating site that does not follow the requirements or present false information regarding how they conduct their background checks could face penalties and fines up to $50,000 per violation.

Mix reviews have been heard with those against the people saying that the state is meddling too much with people’s dating lives and that these measures might provide a false sense of safety, stating that these background check notices and warning might cause users to lower their guard.
