Two persons were killed in a shooting incident inside a shopping mall in Boise, Idaho. At least four other individuals were hurt, including a police officer.
The suspect has been apprehended. The suspect is in critical condition and is being treated at a hospital. The officer who was shot is being treated as well, but his condition is now stable and police said he should be released from the hospital soon.
Authorities have not released any information about the identity of the suspect, the victims, or the officer who was injured in the altercation. The mall has been closed to the public as police investigate the shooting. Until the inquiry is concluded, the mall will stay closed.
Chief Ryan Lee of the Boise Police Department said gunshots were reported around 1:50 p.m. local time Monday. They also received word that one individual had been shot dead. Officers came and instantly noticed a man who matched the shooter’s description.
When the man noticed officers approaching him, he allegedly opened fire. During the firefight, one police officer got shot. According to Lee, the suspect likely acted alone and there was no other shooter in the area.
The motivation for the shooting has yet to be determined, Lee stated during a press briefing Monday evening. Any assumption, he stressed, is still premature. Hundreds of witnesses who were present during the shooting incident are still being interviewed.
The federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives has also joined the investigation. According to reports, police have blocked off a road less than a mile from the mall, which is thought to be a second crime scene linked to the mall shooting.
