President Joe Biden called on Congress to enact stricter gun laws, including the banning of high-powered assault rifles. The president’s statement came on the third anniversary of the tragic Parkland school massacre on Monday.
Apart from banning assault weapons, Biden also called on Congress to enact new legislation to eliminate the immunity of gun manufacturers. During his presidential campaign, Biden had promised to take immediate action to curb gun violence within the first 100 days of his presidency.
“Today, as we mourn with the Parkland community, we mourn for all who have lost loved ones to gun violence,” Biden said.
Last week, several gun control advocate groups – including Everytown for Gun Safety, Students Demand Action, and Moms Demand Action – met with several members of the Biden administration to discuss possible steps to take to prevent further gun-related violence.
One of the topics that were discussed was the appointing of a new “gun czar” that would overlook the administration’s actions against gun violence. The groups reportedly asked Biden to appoint a National Director of Gun Violence Prevention, which will be a Cabinet-adjacent position under the administration.
2019 had one of the most mass shooting incidents in the U.S., with more shootings than there were days in the year. According to the nonprofit organization Gun Violence Archive, there were 417 mass shooting incidents in the country during that year. The only reason why 2020 wasn’t any worse was because of the pandemic, the organization said.
