US President Joe Biden is reportedly preparing to issue gun reform executives orders to circumvent the need for Congress to pass new legislation. White House press secretary Jen Psaki said that the executive orders should help address the growing prevalence of gun violence in the country.
Psaki said that there still wasn’t an “exact time frame” on when the new orders will be passed. She said that Biden fully intends to ensure the safety of all American communities. Apart from issuing executive orders, Biden will still be pushing for the divided Congress to pass new gun control legislation.
On Sunday, Biden said that he was confident that new gun reform legislation will be passed on Capitol Hill. Biden said that he was able to do it in the past and he will be able to do it again.
“I’m the only one who’s ever gotten it passed, man. Everyone keeps wondering whether I care about dealing with rational gun control — the only gun control legislation ever passed is mine. It’s gonna happen again,” Biden told reporters.
Biden was referring to the passing of the 1994 Federal Assault Weapons Ban – a ban that expired in 2004.
Biden’s plans to issue executive orders and push for new gun control laws come in the wake of two major mass shootings in a single week. One of the shootings took place in Atlanta, while the other was at a supermarket in Boulder, Colorado.
