Democratic U.S. presidential candidate Joe Biden has outlined his plans of changing the country’s laws to end gun violence. The lengthy plan, published on Biden’s website titled “The Biden Plan to End Our Gun Violence Epidemic,” enumerated various steps that will be taken if Biden does end up in the oval office.
In Biden’s 3,430-word plan, he explained each initiative in detail. The actions have been called by critics as nothing more than a ploy to turn the Second Amendment into a heavily-regulated privilege.
If Biden wins the presidency, he plans to completely ban the sale of all assault weapons and high-capacity magazines. This plan is highly criticized given Biden’s previous claims that he was against banning firearms. He also plans to remove already bought high-powered assault weapons and magazines from their owners through a government-led nationwide “buy-back” program. Those who refuse to sell their guns to the government will have to register them under the National Firearms Act. Critics have described the move as nothing more than a form of “compensated confiscation.”
Next, Biden plans to repeal the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act. He also plans to enact a law that would restrict the number of firearms an individual can own or buy per month. Biden also plans to close the gun show and online loopholes by requiring all firearm transfers to be subject to a background check. New laws will also be enacted that will effectively ban all online sales of guns, ammunition, gun kits, and gun parts.
As part of Biden’s plan to utilize new technologies, the presidential hopeful is aiming to have 100 percent of all firearms sold in the country to be “smart guns.” These types of firearms will utilize various biometric technologies to only allow the owner of a gun to fire it. If he becomes president, Biden plans to require all gun owners to report all lost or stolen firearms to law enforcement.
To close the so-called “Charleston Loophole,” Biden plans to expand the proposal indicated in the Enhanced Background Checks Act of 2019, which effectively extends the deadline for an FBI NICS background check to be completed from three days to 10 business days. Biden also plans to close other such loopholes, including the “Fugitive from Justice,” “Hate Crime,” “Straw Purchasers,” and “Boyfriend” loopholes.
At the same time, Biden will require the FBI to submit a plan of action to reduce or eliminate errors in its background check process. If he is president, Biden plans to increase the budget of all agencies involved in the prevention of gun violence.
