District of Columbia Mayor Muriel Bowser warned people attending the “Stop the Steal” rally outside of Congress to leave their guns at home. She said that people violating the state’s gun laws and those that incite violence will be arrested.
The city has sought the help of the DC National Guard – who said it would deploy more than 300 troops – to help manage the crowd. The troops will be joined by the US Secret Service, Fire and Rescue Services, and the DC Police.
US President Donald Trump is set to participate in the rally. Trump said on social media that he will definitely attend the “wild” gathering on Wednesday.
Officials said that they are already taking all the necessary measures to avoid violent clashes. Previous pro-Trump rallies – particularly those in November and December last year – quickly turned violent. The demonstrations were attended by right-wing nationalists groups, most wearing combat uniforms, ballistic vests, and helmets. Some people at the previous rallies also brought high-powered rifles.
“Under federal law, it is illegal to possess firearms on the U.S. Capitol grounds and on National Park Service areas, such as Freedom Plaza, the Ellipse, and the National Mall,” Bowser said.
DC currently has one of the strictest gun laws in the country. Open carry is illegal in the state. All gun owners are required to register their firearms with the police. Users must also have a permit to carry concealed firearms.
Bowser said that the city will not tolerate any violence, intimidation, and destruction of public property during this week’s rally. District of Columbia Attorney General Karl Racine said that the state is ready for the rally and everyone’s anxiety levels are now at an all-time high.
