A gun background check bill passed the Oregon house this week, Monday. Voted 32-28 in favor and support of Senate Bill 941. The new background check bill now requires records check for all firearms purchases including private sales. Before this bill, background checks in Oregon are required only for gun purchases from local licensed dealers and at gun shows.

The passing of the bill makes Oregon the 12th state in the US to require background check for private sales and transfers of firearms.

The bill is now on its way to the governor of Oregon, Gov. Kate Brown. The governor has expressed her intention to sign the bill. The bill was passed by Oregon senate last month, 18 democrats were in favor and 12 republicans against.

“I do not want to take anyone’s guns,” said Rep. Dan Rayfield, D-Corvallis, to the Oregonian. “I do not want to register anyone’s guns. I want to make the community safer.”

According to the Oregonian, Mr. Rayfield cited FBI statistics as evidence that background checks work. He said Oregon’s existing background check law stopped 345 felons and 37 people with mental health commitments in their past from buying guns in 2014.

Gun-rights supporters and Republicans who voted against the measure questioned whether it would do anything to prevent mass tragedies.
